Sabrehart - Shadow Acid - Analog Rytm, Digitakt, RC505mk2
This is jam is probably going to be a part of a new live set/album.
It feels like a mix between DJ Shadow- style , downtempo triphop and some acid house. I feel like i've finally settled on a set up/workflow that i'm happy with and that maximises the equipment i want to use without being too overwhelming. I've been struggling with this balance for a long time and have been reconfiguring my studio almost every weekend for the last 4-5 weeks. This has been a rather frustrating time but i actually think it might have finally paid off. The core of the set up are the 4 devices i intend to use to perform live.
The Digitakt is the sync master going out to a 4way midi thru box which runs to Rytm, Rc505mk2 Erica DB-01 and Keystep Pro. The KSP will probably not be part of my gig rig and is out of shot on the left. I have a small synth station with the KSP sequencing the MEGA Fm and the SH01A. The synths are going into a small Mackie Mix 8 which has the Source Audio Ventris as a send effect.
The output of the Mix 8 is going into a stereo input on the RC505 but if i want i can send it to my Boss SP202 to be sampled. The SP202 is a key part of this new work flow but is not part of the live rig either. I am using it for processing sounds such as pads and textures which i record onto the 505 looper. The 505 is running through a chain of effects consisting of the Cooper FX Generation Loss 2 - Past FX Chorus Ensemble - Strymon Deco - Death By Audio Rooms reverb.
The output of this chain is going into a second stereo input on the 505. The chain can also be used to process the synths and i'm looking at possibly getting a patch bay to make changing the routing a bit easier. My guitar pedal board is running into the Mix 8 and then to the looper and my bass is going into the looper via the xlr out of my Aguilar Tone Hammer preamp.
This setup is the result of a lot of experimentation and i'm hoping this is now pretty much settled. I think the DB-01 and SH01A will swap around as the SH01A maybe a more flexible option for the live rig. It's a shame to not use the Keystep Pro and Mega FM in the live rig but tweaking the Mega FM live is pretty risky so sampling it to the looper makes sense.
The KSP Pro does not send control change midi messages so it's not much use in a live rig unfortunately and i want to keep my live rig as portable as possible. I hope that this is the first step to a new set and album. Please let me know if you have any questions about the gear. I'm also considering starting a Patreon where i might offer audio files of jams, albums, in depth set up demos and 1-2-1 lessons. Not sure if there would be much demand though so let me know if anyone would be interested. Happy New Year everyone! Steve / Sabrehart
